4 Racist WordsThat Originally Weren’t Offensive

By Simba The Comic King

If there is one thing that has become terribly cliché with comedians is racial jokes, black and white, white and black, blah blah blah and more black and white, you’d think they are zebras from Madagascar (That was not meant as a reference to Chris Rock). You really can’t blame them though, cause black and white gags are a guaranteed laugh especially when your d**k jokes aren’t getting in (and with that, our first intended pun of the day). Many slang words, used by comic and non-comic folk alike actually have origins that initially weren’t offensive, words like….

In The Beginning Uncle Tom Was A Compliment

The real Uncle Tom, in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s abolitionist 1852 novel, was a martyr who was whipped to death for refusing to deny his faith as well as not revealing the whereabouts of two fugitive women. In the years that followed it became a racial slur which denotes a sell out. Who was responsible for turning this idealistic character it into a racial epithet you might be asking your lonesome self? Surprisingly enough, it was a black man. In 1919 Rev. George Alexander McGuire used it when he declared ‘the Uncle Tom nigga has got to go, and his place must be taken by the new leader of the Negro race … not a black man with a white heart, but a black man with a black heart.” Of course if you asked David Rockefeller, he’d tell you it doesn’t really doesn’t matter where the f**k the heart is coming from.

"Thank the good Lord, child....all these accusations were beginning to take their toll on my nigga esteem."

Rednecks Were Honorable Men And Women

A slang term widely use to refer to poor white Southerners who can be identified by the burns on their necks after working their Southern a**es off in the field all day minus a slave master of course . In popular culture the depiction of rednecks is even more humiliating as they are depicted as toothless dumb f**ks with beer bellies, over the top Southern accents and for some reason wear trucker hats all the time, we assume this is where they keep their teeth.  Originally though, rednecks were a group of motivated freedom fighters who probably got that name because they were wearing red bandanas on their necks in 1921 while battling an army of law officers at Blair Mountain. The red bandanas were morse code for, “Don’t shoot me, I’m one of ya’ll.”

"We have no idea why people think we'd be perfect for horror movies."

Why You Can’t Really Cool Off If Someone Calls You A Coolie

Coolie is a racial slur for people of Asian descent. When it originally came to use though, it was a term the Portuguese use to refer to hired laborers in India. Who may or may not have picked curry in their curry fields. The Gujarati tribe called day laborers the Kuli and it was also the Tamil word for salary for curry picking, kuli.

"Call me a kuli and see if I don't dance on your a**"

A Gypsy Isn’t A Free Spirited Soul….At All

You are probably reading this and thinking to yourself, “What’s the fuss with saying “gyspy,” I’m a f**king gypsy, I move around a lot…..from marriage to marriage.” Incidentally the word gyspy is a strong racial slur used to describe the Romani people. The Romani originated in the Punjab region of Northern India around about the eighth and tenth centuries they said to themselves, “F**k spicy foods, f**k dowry, f**k Bollywood, signora b**ches!” They moved into Europe, people mistook them for Egyptians which is where the word “gypsy” came from.

"I bet the first thought they came to your mind when you saw me is......crystal ball."
